Historic District

Local Historic District

The Lathrup Village Local Historic District
was established in 1999 in response to
threats to Annie Lathrup School (currently
home to the Academy of Lathrup Village).

The Local District comprises Annie Lathrup
School, the Municipal Building, and the
Community Congregational Church.

The Local Historic District Ordinance
provides guidelines for redevelopment of
these sites and, more important, creates
hurdles that a developer would have
to cross to demolish one of the structures.

National Historic District

Being updated.

Note: All structures in the National Historic District that are at least 50 years old are eligible for the Michigan Historic Preservation Tax Credit.

From Concept to Reality

Houses Built Circa 1926-27

Original Design (1920s)

Completed Home

The Elmhurst

The design for this outstanding home won a national model home competition conducted by the Ladies Home Journal in the 1920s.

The Golden Gate

One of the first homes to be occupied in Lathrup Townsite, the Golden Gate exemplifies the California Bungalow, which Louise Lathrup introduced to metropolitan Detroit.

The Emil Lorch

Emil Lorch founded the University of Michigan College of Architecture and served as the school’s first dean. Did he design this home? Was it named in his honor? If you know, let us know.

.

The Dream

This English bungalow on Coral Gables, a brick version of the original stucco design, was offered for sale in the 1920s at $12,000 with $750 down.

.

The Franklin

This English bungalow on San Quentin was built as a mirror-image of the original concept. Otherwise, the design faithfully follows the proposed plan.

.

The Artist

This stately Tudor, on El Dorado is another example of a proposed stucco design that was executed in brick.
